Assessment of geometric definitions related to primary and middle school mathematics in the Turkish Dictionary of the Turkish Language Association

In this study, it is aimed to examine how the definitions of geometric shapes and objects related to primary and secondary school mathematics in the current Turkish Language Association (TDK) Turkish Dictionary (12th edition) are made. In line with the stated purpose, 85 definitions in the dictionary were examined using the case study design. The obtained data were analyzed descriptively using the document analysis technique. According to the findings of the study, it was observed that there were correct, incorrect and correction-required definitions in the dictionary. As a result of the examination of sample sentences or expressions thought to be presented to facilitate the understanding of the definitions, it was determined that expressions that did not reflect the concept were also preferred. In addition, it was encountered that the mathematical definition of 2 concepts was not given and that there was no definition in the dictionary for 29 geometric concepts. In line with the results obtained, it was seen that the errors and deficiencies in the incorrect and correction-required definitions in the TDK Turkish Dictionary were mostly due to not paying attention to situations specific to the field of mathematics. As a result of the study, suggestions were presented for dictionary writers and researchers based on the research findings.
