Abstract (EN)
This dissertation examines the representation of the Muslim-Turkish community by Turkish MPs in the Greek parliament from the establishment of Greece in 1830 until 1964. It focuses on how these representatives advocate for the right of their own community, how they navigate the political landscape of their state and how they contribute to the protection of minority rights. The study not only examines the legislative activities and speeches of these Turkish MPs in the Greek parliament, but also analyses their broader role in shaping the discourse on minority rights within the framework of international treaties and national legislation. Particular attention is paid to the period between 1923 and 1967, when Turkish MPs from Western Thrace played a crucial role in defending the cultural, religious and educational rights of the Turkish minority. Their efforts are considered in the context of the evolving political relationship between Greece and Turkey, highlighting how international agreements such as the Treaty of Lausanne influenced their actions and the Greek government's policies towards its Turkish minority. Using qualitative research methods, including in-depth analysis of parliamentary records, archival documents and historical treaties, the dissertation reveals the multifaceted struggles of Turkish MPs. These struggles were not only legal and political, but also reflected broader issues of identity preservation for the Turkish community in Western Thrace. Moreover, the research highlights how the efforts of these MPs influenced wider Greek-Turkish relations, often becoming a bridge or a point of contention between the two nations. In conclusion, this study contributes to the understanding of minority representation in national politics and offers insights into the specific historical dynamics of the Turkish minority in Greece, focusing on their quest for equal rights and cultural preservation in the face of significant political challenges.
