Abstract (EN)

The study entitled "Melancholy, Hysteria and Paranoia in Turkish Novel (1860-1946)" consists of three chapters. The first chapter, after the assessment of melancholy from a historical perspective, is divided into two titles: men and women. The female melancholics were chosen from the novels Sergüzeşt, Pakize, Zehra, Eylül Heyula and Sevda Peşinde. Male melancholics are the main male characters in the novels Meşakk-ı Hayat, Eylül, Yaban Gülü, Dudaktan Kalbe and Son Menzil. It has been shown whether the characters in the selected novels match up with the symptoms of the disease as included in Mazhar Osman's book. In the second chapter, hysteria has been reviewed from Ancient Greece to the 19th century in a nosologically historical perspective. Then, the symptoms of hysteria in Mazhar Osman's book are listed. The novels Hayal ve Hakikat, Zehra, Aşk-ı Memnû, Bir Akşamdı and Kıskanmak were taken as samples in the chapter. The compatibility of this disease, which was examined through female characters, with medical knowledge was checked as in the previous chapter. Although the last chapter focusing on paranoia seems less comprehensive than the chapters on melancholy and hysteria, Mazhar Osman deems it as anvii important disease. First of all, the paranoia, which was discussed from a historical course in the chapter, was explained with the help of the expert opinions of Uzman. Afterwards, the place of paranoia in the Ottoman-Turkish narrative was determined through the characters in the novels Çengi, Siyah Gözler and Denizin Çağırışı, and their parallels with Mazhar Osman's views were clarified.
