The city in Turkish novel (1872-1923)

Along with the emergence of the novel genre, the setting which has started to take an important place among texts depending on narration, grounds on a multiple structure based on city components. The city becomes more of an issue in terms of reflecting the character of the novel in classic novels with the objective of forging a character and giving an impression of it. This study in which the phenomenon of the city in the novels published between 1872-1923 in Turkish literature is dealt with, aims to examine the aesthetic and cultural texture of the city in the context of the positive and negative effects of modernization movements. The study attempts to put forward the effects of human-setting interaction on the function and language of the city via daily life and historical setting. In accordance with the determined objectives, the novels covering the period in question were scanned within the scope of novel analysis methods, and a number of determinations were made. The information and findings obtained have been classified in a chronological and comparative method, and certain results have been reached. It is envisaged that the results obtained in consequence of the examinations and classifications made will contribute to a better understanding of the city-culture-civilization interaction in the Turkish novel from Tanzimat to Republic Era.
