One party term in turkish novels (1931-1946)

Novel, which is one of the modern types of expression, emerged in Europe in 19th century, with prospering bourgeoisie. However, novel was composed of adventures of a character initially, in later years it started to be interested in political, social and economic issues that are affecting societies. In Ottoman history, novels has first appeared through the end of 19th Century with the translation of Western novels. The first original example of novel in Ottoman was called ?Yeniçeriler?, which was written by Ahmet Mithat Efendi in 1872. This work doesn?t have many of the charactheristics of a novel in modern sense; so it is perceived as a long tale. Social changes that Ottoman society had experienced during this period, influenced Ottoman novel. Therefore, changes in the structure of state, human relations and economic system were undertaken in the novels written during this period. Due to the fact that Westernisation was brought by means of government after the proclamation of Republic; novels had been a frequently used instrument to announce puclic about the changes in question. These novels which were written in the first years of Republic, served to the purposes of; enforcing political revolutions, forming Western style social relations and elimination of previous system. There were also some novels opposing to performed revolutions and changes, in addition to the novels fulfilling above 22 3 mentioned purposes. Despite the ruling of Single Party, these novels didn?t hesitate to criticise the system. Among the novels explicating Single Party period, while there were some in favor of performed revolutions, there were some others written as a response to political and social changes. Besides a number of novels, which were giving advices to government about keeping its revolutionary feature and there were also some novels citicising the attitude and behaviour of bureaucracy. Due to the fact that novels had embraced quite deal of varieties, this makes Turkish novel a useful tool to conceive transformation process which was started with the Ottoman and continued with Republic. Political subjects like revolutions, dimensions of political change, cult of Atatürk in government, secularisation of education, increasing bureaucracy oriented degeneration, dimensions of strengthening nationalism and democracy trials were argued in the novels expressing Single Party period. Novels which are analysing the changes in economic structure, analyzed the economic condition of people living in rural and urban areas, political principles and laws that are steering economic regulations. On the other hand, Novels analysing social problems discussed subjects such as; Westernisation movements, rapidly spreading balls in the community, understanding of new governments? urban and space and also social structure in rural areas. How Single Party policies influenced Turkish society can be overtly understood when the fact that Turkish novel?s long list of subjects and different aproaches to these subjects, taken into consideration.
