Industry 4.0 maturity model for Turkish defense industry

SUMMARYKeywords: Industry 4.0, defense industry, maturity model.The Industry 4.0 concept is a production concept where production systems can communicate directly with smart products and information technology systems. In this way, it provides high digitization opportunity with the arrangement and integration of all processes in production. However, the high investment costs involved and the fact that it causes information security gap are the most important difficulties.The developments and changes caused by the Industry 4.0 concept require radical changes in the defense industry like all branches of industry and provide significant benefits.How long companies have adapted or transformed into Industry 4.0, how much they are missing and in which subtitle or component of Industry 4.0 are measured with maturity models based on Industry 4.0 criteria. In the literature different criteria and different calculation methods are used in maturity models.It is accepted that Industry 4.0 criteria have different importance for different industrial sectors and they change over time. Because of this, it is necessary to investigate the value of each criterion in the transition of the defense industry to Industry 4.0, which differs from other sectors with its unique features, and to develop a maturity model according to these values.A two-stage maturity model for the Defense Industry has been developed in this study.In the first stage, the weights of the criteria were calculated with the MACBETH method in accordance with the opinions of the employees in the Turkish Defense Industry. Then, in the second stage, using these weights, a maturity value was calculated with TOPSIS, one of the Multi Criteria Decision Making Methods, to be able to see how much companies have completed their transition to Industry 4.0 and how much they have developed in which criteria. Among the companies in the study, Company5 has been evaluated as the best mature one with regard to Industry 4.0 transition as a result of TOPSIS Industry 4.0 Maturity Model.
