Intra-family communication in the turkish cinema: The sample of Nuri Bilge Ceylan cinema

When we look at the movies related to the Turkish cinema, it is possible to say that the family phenomenon has taken place in the movies remarkably. The family as a social institution has been shaped with regard to the aspects of intra-family relations besides the classifications such as structurally large or nuclear family. This situation also affects the process of family phenomenon in the movies. As in every social institution, while family members communicate with each other, they are likely to have troubles because of the fact that communication process fails. Therefore, it can be considered that communication relations may be dealt with a communication problematic when the movies are viewed in the scope of intra family communication. The family phenomenon in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's movies, one of the outstanding representatives of Turkish cinema, gains a seat as a problematic system of relations. In this study, Nuri Bilge Ceylan's films, "The Small Town" (1997) and "Three Monkeys" (2008) have been examined in the context of interpersonal communication and in terms of family communication patterns along with the structural peculiarities of the family institution. The main objective of this research is to examine the communication issue of the family in the movies of Turkish cinema with a determined paradigm under today's conditions and to interpret in a conceptual framework. In the aforementioned movies, how the communication issues have been shaped is emphasized and then an analysis has been conducted as to how the communication has been converted into an obstacle process. In the analysis, what has been utilized is the interpersonal communication which is composed of the definition of the relations between the members of intra family and the dimensions of communication, and verbal or nonverbal communication. The movies that are considered in terms of family communication models have enabled the codes of intra family communication obstacles to be analyzed in the Turkish cinema.
