Football in Turkish cinema and mass culture

In this thesis, titled "Football in Turkish Cinema and Mass Culture", firstly, the concept of football has been identified. As a sport, the alteration and evaluation of football throughout the time football have been explicated. Afterwards, the beginning and rising of football in Turkey have been mentioned in the extent of historical process, then the theory of mass culture has been defined. From 1948, the release year of the movie Damga, which is considered as inception of Turkish Cinema, to 1985 football-themed movies, their subjects, actors / actresses and directors have been chronologized. 1965-1985, the most productive period of Turkish Cinema, as well as the interval of most produced football-themed movies, has been selected as research sample. Subsequently, via the theory of mass culture, the presentation of football representation and perception of being a footballer have been assessed, then by providing examples from various movies, the situation of football movies in Turkey has been elaborated. In the last section, content analysis method has been used to analyze the four Turkish movies that each has different representation; Taçsız Kral (1965), İnek Şaban (1978), Gol Kralı (1980), Ya Ya Ya Şa Şa Şa (1985) with the scope of mass culture and specified criteria set. For more detailed analysis of films advertising and industrial football, women and social gender themes were chosen as criteria set and these criteria were applied. Following movies have been thoroughly analyzed with the reasons given; Taçsız Kral, which was the first and only biography genre in football movie as of the date it was released, İnek Şaban, which demonstrated the corruption caused by mafia-football involvement and masculine conflict that spread to football, Gol Kralı, that came up with an antithesis against the masculine identity of Turkish Cinema and representation of women that never placed in secondary position in football, Ya Ya Ya Şa Şa Şa, unlike others, conceptualized the footballer in a drama theme, where the alternates rendered a footballer in comedy plot, plus depicted a footballer as an anti-hero.
