Abstract (EN)

Eurocentrism is a widely debated paradigm that has faced significant criticism regarding its content. When analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of this paradigm within the framework of critiques and observations put forth by both local and foreign intellectuals, it becomes obvious that it possesses a structure that extends beyond established realities. The historical presence of Europe and the examination of the systems in which Europe holds a central position in the world have been significant topics of debate and examination in the realm of social sciences. The Eurocentric paradigm has had a significant influence on Turkish historiography. Within this framework, the aim is to analyze the impact of Eurocentrism on Turkish historiography through a critical lens. To assess the findings of this examination in relation to Turkish historiography, the research focused on the works of Niyazi Berkes. Therefore, through Niyazi Berkes' works on Turkish modernization, the place and effects of the Eurocentric paradigm in Turkish historiography were revealed. To establish a comprehensive overview of the Eurocentric paradigm, the literature on this topic was examined within a chronological framework. The analyses showed the overall structure and distinctive features of the paradigm. We thoroughly examined Niyazi Berkes' works from this perspective, identifying Eurocentric findings. Through an examination of Niyazi Berkes' works within the paradigm, the focus was placed on the Eurocentric approaches, and their impact on Turkish historiography was demonstrated. The results of the study suggest that Turkish historiography needs to be purified of Eurocentric influences for Turkish society to fully embrace its historical identity and memory through self-consciousness.
