A comparative analysis of color and number idioms in Turkish and German

In this study, the idioms containing the concepts of color and number of the Turkish and German societies have been dealt with comparatively. The study has been limited to the idioms including the concepts of color and number. The reason is that these concepts play an effective role in the establishment of the society and so, reflect the society. The other reason is that these concepts differ semantically and culturally in both societies. Another reason is that concepts are basic words that foreign language learners and native speakers should know. How these concepts are interpreted in both communities has also been studied. This study consists of four parts. The first part includes the place of idiom in linguistics, the history of idioms, their definitions, their usage and properties, and the explanation of other concepts with which they are confused. The second part explains the importance of the Turkish and German culture of color and number words, which form the study's limitations. In the third part, the literature review of Turkish and German idioms containing colors and numbers is examined and classified with their meanings. In the last part, which forms the basis of the study, these idioms are categorized semantically. Similarities, affinities and differences between these Turkish and German idioms are compared with each other in terms of semantics and culture. The obtained idioms were evaluated in terms of semantics and culture in both cultures. The similarities and differences between idioms containing these concepts in both languages are explained by giving examples. As a result, it has been observed, that these idioms, which were analyzed, have more differences in addition to expressing a similar meaning in both cultures. Keywords: Idiom, Color, Number, Cultur
