Özet (EN)
In this study, idioms, which are expressions used frequently daily communication, were studied. This study, which dwells on the fact that these implicitly expressed phrases that are used to express extended phrases shortly, to embellish or to make people think are not considered important in foreign language teaching and that not knowing the idioms creates breakdown in communication, consists of two parts; theoretical and empirical. In the theoretical part of this study, after the purpose and the importance of the study were given, various opinions and definitions about language and foreign language were viewed. The concept of `idiom? was handled and institutional information about its features, structures and varieties were given, after the importance of foreign language and the difficulties in foreign language teaching were mentioned. After the functions of idioms in daily communication and the importance of idioms in foreign language teaching were discussed, the empirical part was looked into in detail. In this context, to determine the rate of idioms that used in daily communication, one literary work about children's literature, three newspapers and three magazines in each language (German and Turkish) were analyzed and idioms in them were identified. In the selection of these works and publications, bestselling newspapers and magazines as well as recommended children books were preferred. In this context, besides the books ?Seçme Hikayeler? from Ömer Seyfettin and ?Der Kleine Mann? from Erich Kästner, one issue from top selling newspapers of Turkey and Germany; ?Zaman?, ?Posta?, ?Hürriyet?, ?Süddeutsche Zeitung?, ?Frankfurter Allgemeine?, ?Die Welt? and one issue from bestselling magazines; ?Aksiyon?, ?Yeni Aktüel?, ?Aydınlık?, ?Der Spiegel?, ?Stern? and ?Focus? were selected and idioms and idiom frequencies in these magazines, newspapers and books were determined. And to determine how often idioms are used in foreign language teaching, most common textbooks in foreign language lectures were handled and the idioms they contain and their frequencies were determined. In the selection of the textbooks, besides the Turkish teaching books ?Türkisch - Lehrbuch für Anfänger und Fortgeschrittene?, ?Lehrbuch der türkischen Sprache? and ?Güle Güle? that are used at the department of Turcology of Johann Wolfgang Goethe University (Frankfurt), Justus-Liebrig University (Giessen) and Freie University (Berlin) of Germany, German foreign language textbook sets ?Lagune? and ?Schritte International?, that are used at preparation classes of German language departments of Ankara University, Gazi University and Hacettepe University were preferred. In this context again, the idioms that exist both in daily communication and in foreign language books were sorted in alphabetic order with their meanings, their area of use was determined and the statistical information about the idioms was presented with various tables in the findings section of the study. After the analysis it was defined that in daily communication used idioms are nearly absent in foreign language textbooks. Textbooks are an important source for students to learn idioms used on a daily basis. It was concluded that idioms should be presented in textbooks as much as they are used in daily communication. Otherwise, there will be difficulties and breakdowns in communication. In this study, there are also some suggestions about how idioms can be used in foreign language textbooks. Keywords: Turkish idioms, German idioms, idioms that are used in daily communication, the use of idioms in foreign language teaching, idioms in Turkish as a foreign language textbooks., idioms in German as a foreign language textbooks
