Examining textuality standarts of narrative texts in Turkish textbooks

Beaugrande and Dressler (1981) who gathered standards required for a sentence to be a text under seven headings, state that the text is a communicative phenomenon. In the absence of any of these standards, communicative of text will be invalid. The cohesion which reveals the surface structure of the text, has the value of being a text, text and communication with the standards of coherence, intentionality, acceptability, informativeness, situationality and intertextuality that form the deep structure of the text. One of the tools used in Turkish lessons in schools is the texts in the textbooks. These texts should carry the textual standards as a whole. Texts that meet the textual standards will bring a scientific understanding to language teaching. In addition, it will provide a more regular and understandable usage in terms of using Turkish as a mother tongue. In this study; 30 narrative texts in 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade MEB (Ministry of Education) Turkish textbooks published in the 2018-2019 academic year were examined in terms of "cohesion" standard. In the analysis of the texts, the document analysis method was used and the narrative type texts in the determined books were determined, and these texts were classified according to the narrative text type. The narrative texts in the books were analyzed according to the headings of reference, ellipse, substitution, connective elements, reiteration and collocation which are included in the cohesion standard. As a result, cohesion pattern in the texts in the selected classes are respectively included in the form of connective elements, reference, reiteration, collocation, ellipse and substitution. In addition to all these, collocation criterion does not exist in 6 texts in total. Keywords: Textlinguistics, Textuality Standards, Cohesion, Turkish Textbooks
