Abstract (EN)

With the impact of globalisation in the evolving world, international relations are gaining increasing importance day by day. International communication is inevitable, both in diplomatic relations and due to the migrations and resulting circulation. Consequently, being able to speak a language and learning a new language has become significantly important in this context. Recently, as our country has become a sought-after destination for immigration from abroad, the importance of teaching Turkish as a foreign language has increased and become a mandatory demand. Considering the undeniable number of students coming to study, it has been observed that there is a limited availability of resources for teaching Turkish to individuals whose mother tongue or second language is English. In addition, the number of Turks living abroad has shown a rapid increase in recent years, naturally leading to an increased importance of teaching Turkish as a foreign language for Turkish families living abroad and other individuals who want to learn Turkish. With the knowledge that English is lingua franca, it was decided to make a Turkish-English present tense comparison after determining the scarcity of resources to be used in this field. The purpose of this master's thesis is to satisfy the resource need when teaching Turkish to foreigners. As there is no single equivalence for this structure in English, and it has never been analysed in detail and comprehensively in written sources, the Turkish present simple tense has been chosen. Since they belong to different language families, the simple present tense in Turkish does not correspond to a single tense and structure in English. Therefore, in this study, all main tense structures and auxiliary structures that do not correspond to a tense are introduced and explained. Document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was utilized in the research within the framework of the study's objectives. In this study, in which Turkish was chosen as the language of origin, the structures related to the Turkish aorist and its past and evidential forms in Sabahattin Ali's worldwide known novel ''Madonna in a Fur Coat'' and its English translation were analysed and explained from a morphemic point of view; the equivalence relationship of these structures in English and their contrastive analysis with a pedagogical approach were made. In conclusion, the findings obtained during the study were analysed both statistically and theoretically and some suggestions were presented. It is hoped that the data obtained as a result of the research will serve as a contributing additional resource for those who teach Turkish as a foreign language in both Turkey and abroad and for students whose mother tongue or second language is English. Keywords: morphology, linguistics, teaching Turkish as a foreign language.
