The verb ol- in Turkish

This study aims to describe the verb ol- based on texts of different literary genres representing the last 60 years of the Turkish standard language. For this purpose, in the scanned texts, a corpus of sentences, phrases, lexical units, etc. containing the verb ol- has been created. Representing the usages of the verb ol-, the corpus has been created by scanning seven works of literature. The study consists of five chapters. In the introduction, information is provided about the subject, purpose, importance, and limitations of the study, and definitions of some important concepts in the study are presented. In the second chapter, the theories forming the framework of the study are explained. In the third chapter, the method followed in the study is explained and information about the population and sample of the study is given. In the fourth chapter, the usage characteristics of the verb ol- are described in the context of the corpus obtained from the scanned works. This description consists of six main sections. In these sections, the verb ol- is examined in terms of morphological, syntactic, morpho-syntactic, semantic, aspect-act of manner-mode and speech pattern characteristics. In the morphology section, the conjugation and morphological derivations of the verb ol-, its use in parts of speech, its place in compound words, and its voice features are investigated. In this chapter, it is also discussed whether the verb ol- transforms into affixes or not. In the syntax part, the clauses with and without the case suffixes (adverb-verb suffixes) and the sentence element properties of the verb ol- are examined. The parallelism of the verb ol- with i- and +D°r in morphology-syntax is discussed and its features of converting various compound sentences into simple sentences through transformations are presented. In the semantics section, the semantic field and polysemy of the verb ol- and its lexical field and near-synonymity are examined. In the last section of the description, speech patterns with the verb ol- are discussed. In the fifth and final chapter of the study, the results obtained in the study and recommendations are presented. The study concludes by presenting the sample-based corpus which contains the usage characteristics of the verb ol- and the Turkish-English index of the related terms in the study. In the study, the verb ol- is examined in terms of all its grammatical aspects except phonetics. Since the study is focused on works written in different years since the 1960s in Turkish and different spelling forms of the verb ol- are not encountered in the written language, a phonetic analysis of the verb is not carried out. As such, the verb ol- is described in terms of words, phrases, sentences, and speech patterns. The descriptions made throughout the study reveal that the verb ol- exhibits different usage characteristics from other verbs in many respects. Many words with a high frequency of use, such as the verb ol- in Turkish, has a dynamic structure. With detailed studies on these words, the mobility of the constituent units which take up more space in Turkish grammar will also be revealed.
