An evaluation of Arthur Lumley Davids' "A Grammar of the Turki̇sh Language" in terms of the teaching of Turkish as a foreign language

Although the Western attempts to know about the East date back to very old times, there has been an orientalism-based interest since especially 13th century. Apart from the warfare environment, as a phenomenon fed by scientific worries, the language and culture of Turks have been a subject of interest in the West. The Western studies on Turkish language became to be dealt with scientifically in especially the 19th century. The work which has been subjected to this study, "A Grammar of the Turkish Language" was written by Arthur Lumley Davids in the 19th century. A Jewish English orientalist, Arthur Lumley Davids wrote the grammar of Turkish, inspired by the information that was written before him in the West. Lumley also put a part of eighty pages regarding Turkish language, history and civilization in his work. Moreover, Lumley also added a part including Turkish poetry and texts at the end of his work.
