The analysis of Barış Manço's lyrics in terms of culture transfer in teaching Turkish as a foreign language

Language and culture are in a close relationship with each other. Every language is nourished and influenced by the culture it is in. Culture is transferred to future generations through language. In this context, based on the view that language and culture are inseparable parts, it is thought that in foreign language teaching, the culture of the target language must also be learned in order to fully learn the target language. The aim of this study is to examine Barış Manço's lyrics in terms of cultural transfer in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. For this purpose, cultural elements in Barış Manço's songs, whose lyrics belong to him, were identified. The universe of the study consists of all songs whose lyrics belong to Barış Manço. The sample consists of 93 songs written by Barış Manço and whose lyrics belong to him. The songs determined in this direction were examined in terms of cultural elements using the document analysis method, which is one of the qualitative research methods. The data obtained was analyzed with descriptive analysis, and a total of 624 cultural elements were identified. Of these elements, 99 are daily life skills, 34 are interpersonal relations, 46 are values and education, 22 are literature, art, and music, 63 are traditions and folklore, 11 are social life, 17 are geography and space, 32 are persons, and 300 are vocabulary collected under the vocabulary category. Based on our analysis, it has been determined that Barış Manço's lyrics are very rich in cultural elements. It has been concluded that Barış Manço's songs are an important source of cultural transfer in teaching Turkish as a foreign language.
