A comparison of the 5th grade social studies curriculums of Türkiye and the USA in the context of active citizenship and global citizenship

This research comparatively examines the 5th-grade Social Studies curricula implemented in Turkey and the United States (USA) in the context of "active citizenship" and "global citizenship." The aim of the research is to reveal the extent to which both countries' curricula incorporate these concepts in their objectives, content, teaching-learning processes, and assessment dimensions. A qualitative research approach was adopted, and document analysis, a qualitative research method, was used. In the data collection process, the current curricula of Turkey and the USA were systematically analyzed. The analysis was based on the National Council for Social Studies (NCSS) citizenship education standards and UNESCO's global citizenship education framework. The findings show that the Turkish curriculum places a stronger emphasis on active citizenship, while the US curriculum emphasizes the global citizenship dimension more prominently.
