Family counseling application for intrafamilial problems in Turkey

institution has gone through some structural-functional changes due to social, cultural and economic reasons; primarily the effect of social change caused by modernization. These changes in family have stimulated intrafamilial problems. Thus, there is a need for some psycho-social services for family in order to enhance – develop the structural-functional qualities of family. These services comprise of four groups as educational, defender, therapy and counseling activities. In this manner, one of the psycho-social services that aim to support families psychologically, socially, culturally and educationally is family counseling service within the scope of counseling activities. In this context, the objective of our study is to examine family counseling, which is a psycho-social service type aimed at solving intrafamilial problems in Turkey, within the scope of a conceptual, theoretical and qualitative research. Offering ways and skills of solving various intrafamilial problems in psycho-social sense; family counseling is considered an area to be examined from a scientific perspective as it is a very new service in Turkey. In this context, our study intends to draw a general profile of family counseling in Turkey from a number of aspects including its conceptual definition, content and extent, trainings and applications, legal and corporate bases, reasons of needing family counseling in our country, as well as the importance and goal of family counseling. Thus, face-to-face interviews were conducted with academic members who were competent in family counseling and professional members who were field implementers of this area via a semi-structured interview form in order to reveal and understand the general condition of family counseling in our country with the pluses and minuses. The data acquired from these interviews were used in conveying the general course of family counseling in Turkey and (positive and negative) aspects of family counseling applications in our country aimed at intrafamilial problems.
