An Investigation into the effects on road accidents of improvements in the highway safety systems of Turkey and Azerbaijan

In this study, an attempt has been made to identify the effects on road accidents of improvements in the highway safety systems and geometric standards of Turkey and Azerbaijan and to investigate road accident statistics in the two countries. In this context, first, the Republic of Azerbaijan has been introduced with statistical data and the highway geometric standards and road accident reports have been described. After providing basic information on the subject, road accident statistics have been examined according to their characteristics, an the elements that may have an influence on road accidents have been identificed. In the later parts of the study, the position and importance of correct highway safety, systems with regard to road accidents have been emphasized, and an examination has been made (on the basis of road accident reports) concerning the situation before and after improvements carried out at selected black spots on the highways of Turkey and Azerbaijan. At the end of the study, it is stressed that the human factor must not be neglected as it is greatly important for reducing road accidents and ensuring an orderly and safe road and traffic environment, and proposals are made for additions and new formulas in road accident reports in order to make it easier to identify black spots with regard to highway safety systems. additions and new formulas in road accident reports in order to make it easier to identify black spots with regard to highway safety systems.
