Reading the development of architecture in Turkish republican period through housing: Kayseri Sahabiye as a case

With the impact of globalization, the spatial transformation of cities has gained momentum and it becomes difficult to read the continuity between the past, the present and the future of the cities. In Kayseri, Sahabiye Neighborhood that is located within the city centre, is on the agenda with an urban regeneration project in recent years. The area, takes its name from historic Sahabiye Madrasah, is one of the first Modernist housing examples of the Republican ideology. With the influence of housing policies in Turkey, the neighborhood is in a process of continuous transformation and re-existence. While 100th anniversary of Republic of Turkey is on our way, analyzing Sahabiye Neighborhood (which can be read as a palimpsest between the past and the future) is going to be a very important study to understand city, architecture and housing. In the introduction section; the starting point of the study, its importance, purpose, scope and the sources are examined. In the second part, the development of the concepts of modernism and modernization which forms the theoretical basis and their reflections on architecture, city and housing in the process are discussed. In the third part, the analysis method and the urban development in Kayseri Sahabiye Neighborhood are outlined. In the findings section, the development of the housing fabric in Sahabiye Neighborhood during the post-Republican period is examined in four different periods as 1930-1950,1950-1980,1980-2000 and the period after 2000. An inventory study is conducted on the main arteries and the characteristics of the housing fabric are identified.
