Abstract (EN)
In this study; On the basis of Turkish Sports History, the diversity of sports life in Izmir was depicted in the period of Atatürk (1923-1938) in the first years of the Republic. While depicting this diversity, the social and social situation of the city was taken into consideration and the place and importance of sports life in İzmir society was determined. Until the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, sports life in the Ottoman Empire was examined in two dimensions, traditional and modern. Within the atmosphere of freedom that the declaration of the Second Constitutional Monarchy brought to the Ottoman country, the interest of the Turkish nation in sports increased and as a result, the sports life gained mobility. It is possible to observe this activity in İzmir as well. As a matter of fact, besides foreigners and minorities, Muslim Turks began to appear in different branches of sports, especially football. Sports activities were also adversely affected during the World War I and the armistice and occupation period that followed. İzmir had a hard time getting rid of the dark traces of this period for a long time. The priority of Izmir, which was burned down with the liberation from the Greek occupation, was the reconstruction of the city. With the establishment of the new order after the National Struggle period, the sports life in İzmir gained momentum, as a result of this activity, many sports clubs were established and studies were carried out for the institutionalization of sports. Each sports club established in Izmir has made significant contributions to the city's sports life and provided its development. The Turkish Hearths and Community Centers, which were important structures of the Republican period, also contributed to the development and advancement of sports life in Izmir. In this regard, sports events held in schools have also significantly affected the city's sports life.
