Continuity of typology and components of traditional housing i̇n Turkey

It is said that modernization and globalization affect and change all domains of cultures and transforms the rich cultures of the world into one. However it is proposed by many thinkers, that traditions evolve over time and without changing their original essence change their form, thereby meeting the new needs of modern life. This research is undertaken for the purpose of releasing whether traditional structures are fading away, and if not, in what kind of implicit ways they continue to exist. Edward Said's and Seyyid Hüseyin Nasr?s thesis is corroborated in this study.In the meantime, as a result of the change of life patterns and environments through modern life, some housing typologies have grown fainter. However, in order to ensure the very important traditional concept of privacy in our traditional houses, sofas, hayats and other kinds of in-between spaces were planned. Now in the new housing types which are widely adopted in this country, concepts of privacy and personal space last in other forms and new houses make distinctions between day/night, dirty/clean polarizations. In new house kitchens assumed an autonomous presence; they are arrived directly from the entrance, as in the past.A rich amount of modern building elements such as doors, windows, floors, stairs, ceilings have been subject to mass production in new housing and they have replaced old hand manufactured elements and materials. However, the meaning of closets, cupboards, Ottoman platforms survive in different forms. Ottoman cedars convertibles are replaced by window blinds, shutters and screen which embody the same meaning. Gusuhanes last in the form of parent?s bathroom privately used from the inside of the room. Furnaces and wall-furnaces which were used for heating and cooking are replaced by artificial electric furnaces to provide a warm atmosphere. Kitchen furniture is replaced by readymade kitchen parts but the bear the same meaning of convenience and comfort. Candles and candle holders of the past survive as a romantic substitute and maintain a traditional identity. Especially the main gates to the apartments are handmade in the Art Nouveau style and render an individual Identity for the apartment houses as they did for the detached houses yesterday. Thus the research hasdemonstrated that social memory cannot be erased very simply in the context of social housing if one pays due attention and deciphers the signs and symbols.
