Abstract (EN)

This study aims to examine the logos and emblems of universities in Turkey in the context of locality, revealing how these visual identity elements represent the relationship between universities and their geographical, historical, and cultural environments. University logos are not merely aesthetic designs; they are also strategic communication tools that visually express the institutions' historical backgrounds, values, and their connections with the social structures in which they are embedded. The research addresses a current gap by analyzing the interaction between visual identity in institutional communication and local affiliation. Universities' efforts to present themselves not only through their academic identities but also with an image integrated into local culture and history highlight the theme of locality in visual communication design. In this context, the study is significant in offering a unique contribution toward understanding the impact of local visual indicators on institutional identity. A qualitative research method was adopted in the study, employing web-based content analysis, document review, and Saussurean semiotic analysis techniques in combination. In 2024, an analysis was conducted of all the universities active in Turkey. The analysis included 30 university logos, selected from purposive sampling, that featured the theme of locality. Data were collected through official university websites and institutional identity guidelines published therein. Each logo was evaluated based on visual indicators, typographic structure, color usage, formal characteristics, and local references. The findings indicate that many university logos incorporate local elements such as geographical formations, historical structures, cultural motifs, and city symbols. However, it was also observed that the influence of global design trends had weakened the local indicators in some university logos. This reveals a variation in the extent to which universities reflect their local identities. In conclusion, university logos are functional tools for visually representing local culture. Consciously and strategically integrating local indicators into designs has a positive influence on institutional brand identity, social belonging and recognisability. Accordingly, the study makes recommendations for incorporating the principle of locality more systematically and creatively into universities' visual identity development processes
