Özet (EN)

This study aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the conducting education programs offered in higher education institutions across Türkiye. Conducting, as a discipline within music education, requires a holistic combination of technical proficiency, leadership capabilities, and interpersonal communication skills. The central research question explores the strengths and weaknesses of conducting curricula and evaluates their structural designs, inter-institutional similarities and differences, and the perspectives of students and graduates regarding the quality and effectiveness of their education. A qualitative research methodology was employed, utilizing descriptive and survey-based approaches. The data collection process included literature review, multi-choice questionnaires, written and audio-recorded interviews, and Likert-scale evaluations. Participants were selected among individuals currently receiving or previously having received conducting education within Türkiye, regardless of age group. Institutional course schedules and content were analyzed to assess how conducting education supports both professional and personal development. The results indicate that core musical competencies—such as aural skills, solfège, rhythmic analysis, score reading and interpretation, conducting technique, ensemble management, and musical cultural knowledge—are considered fundamental professional qualifications by all participants. Additionally, leadership, reliability, responsibility awareness, and personal development emerged as indispensable personal attributes for conductors. Communication skills, confident body language, correct use of Turkish, vision, creativity, maturity, and emotional sensitivity were also highlighted as highly valued traits. While most participants agree that current curricula provide a solid foundation in music theory and performance, a significant majority reported limited access to practical and interdisciplinary learning opportunities. Of the respondents, 72% emphasized the need for supplementary training beyond institutional curricula, particularly through masterclasses, foreign language programs, vocal training, classroom management, and ensemble psychology education. Such external learning avenues were found to contribute positively to participants' musical interpretation, leadership capabilities, and self-confidence. Further findings revealed varying levels of satisfaction among students and graduates. Only 20% found the existing curriculum fully sufficient, whereas 72% deemed it inadequate in preparing students for the professional demands of conducting. The desire for advanced orchestration, score interpretation, and graduate-level studies was notably present among participants. Moreover, respondents expressed a need for conducting programs to place greater emphasis on interpretive creativity, stylistic knowledge, and performance-based skill development. In conclusion, this research underscores the necessity for a restructuring of conducting education in Türkiye through more inclusive, practice-oriented, and interdisciplinary curricula. The findings support the idea that modern conducting education should integrate broader pedagogical strategies, personalized growth initiatives, and field-based applications. Ultimately, the study contributes meaningful insights toward shaping future conducting education models and enhancing the overall quality and effectiveness of music training programs within the context of Turkish higher education.
