Immigration and socio-economic adaptation process of Turkey: A case study on people from Trabzon living in Istanbul

Migrations consist of varied reasons that lead to different results. Generally thinking, social, cultural, political, financial and such kinds of reasons may not only trigger migrations, but also the result may considerably affect these areas. Therefore, migration has become a broad research area of various disciplines. In general, migrations are classified into forced, voluntary, immigration, emigration, labor migration and brain drain. Migrations, which had occured because of wars or natural disasters in the past, have recently begun to happen due to the economic distress. Initially, there was a low-degree immigration in Turkey, but in 1950s, it became a powerful affair which deeply impressed the society.Repulsive rural life with agricultural recrations and charming urban life dependent on industrialization proves the dense migrations in Turkey. Besides, devoloping transportation and communication means, population growth in rural areas are also contribute to the urban population. Thus, some problems have occured on immigrants in urban areas as well as migrated rural areas.Marmara region and İstanbul are no doubtly the most densely affected areas in Turkey due to the widespread migration wave. When the population of İstanbul with all its immigrations since 1950s was analyzed, the ratio of people born in Trabzon is considerably high. This study investigates the adaptation rate of those people migrated from Trabzon to İstanbul in terms of social, cultural, political, and financial ways. The results of the investigation shows that immigrants from Trabzon easily adjusted themselves to live in İstanbul.
