The efforts to build a nuclear power plant in Turkey has nearly 50 years of history, but the current legal framework was created in 2007 with the adoption of the law numbered 5710. So, the type, model and fuel of nuclear power plant have got very critical importance. Turkey has not any experience about nuclear power plant technology. Therefore, Turkey must follow the more advanced countries in the nuclear technology. Indeed, Turkey's first power plant in Mersin Akkuyu site to be built by a Russian company ROSATOM. Another important issue of nuclear power plants is nuclear waste and its storage. Low and high activity level waste are occured from nuclear power plant. Low level wastes are easily processed and liquidated. High activity level wastes are spent fuels that are storaged in the poll near the reactor core and its allowed to cool. Spent fuels contain % 95 valuable materials for nuclear fuel. Two method are used that open and closed cycle in the World for spent fuel storage. Spent fuels are accepted waste at open cycle nd they are buried underground. But it is not a waste for closed cycle and then it is reprocessing and seperated valuable materials. The reamaining waste is firstly vitrified and then it is buried underground. Open cycle is generally used in the world because of lower cost. Spent fuels can be storaged in the storage pool for many years. The most appropriate fuel cycle for Turkey has been discussed in the thesis. This study provides general and current datas about nuclear power plants and energy status of world and Turkey. Then nuclear programmes in Turkey are investigated in a comparative ways. Finally, availability, cost and waste storage of fuel and reserves are investigated and then it is offered suggestions for more convenient methods.
