A comparative analysis of Turkey's competitiveness in cereal products with G7 countries

Abstract (EN)

With globalization, foreign trade between countries has increased, capital movements have been liberalized and these liberalization movements in trade have caused countries to compete with each other. Countries have also taken part in this process by trying to become competitive by offering the goods and services they produce in international markets in order to create competitive power. Turkey, like many other countries in this competitive process, is also in competition in the groups of goods and services produced. For this reason, Turkey has been the subject of studies in terms of measuring competitiveness in many goods and service groups. The aim of this study is to analyze Turkey's competitiveness in cereals against G7 countries. The study is based on the Harmonized Classification System (HS) in terms of classification and grouping of agricultural products. In order to determine Turkey's competitiveness in agricultural products, the Explained Comparative Advantage (ECU) index was used. Thus, the competitiveness of Turkey's cereal products (Wheat, Rye, Barley, Oats, Corn, Rice, Sorghum, Millet) against G7 countries (Germany, United States, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, France and Canada) has been revealed. In the light of the findings, Turkey's HS1006-Rice, HS1005-Corn and HS1007-Sorghum products against Germany, HS1003-Barley, HS1006-Rice, HS1008-Millet and HS1002-Rye against the United States, HS1005-Corn, HS1007- Sorghum, HS1006-Rice, HS1002-Rye and HS1008-Millet against the United Kingdom, HS1006-Rice against France, HS1005-Corn, HS1008-Millet and HS1003- Barley; HS1003-Barley, HS1005-Corn, HS1001-Wheat and HS1008-Millet against Italy; HS1003-Barley, HS1005-Corn, HS1008-Millet against Japan; and HS1006- Rice, HS1007-Sorghum, HS1005-Corn and HS1003-Barley against Canada has a competitive power in its products.
