The effects of olympics on urban transformation ın Turkey

Modern olympics have been revitalized by Pierre de Coubertin in 1896 and they have become one of the most prestigious events in the world. The reason for that is the politic, economic, social and urban effects of the olympics on the host city. Between all of these effects, especially because of the economic effects of these games, cities started to compete to host these organizations. Cities in Turkey are also taking part in this competition in the recent years which world cities are going through.The subject of this thesis is to examine the role of olympics on urban transformation. The aim of thesis is to focus on the role of olympics on urban transformation which is the most important heritage of olympics, rather than olympics? economical benefits which is accepted as the first reason for a city to host the game. Basic assumption of this thesis is ?Olympics are means for cities to realize their urban transformation?. In this thesis, Turkish and English literature has been examined, for the effects of Trabzon Olympics on urban transformation in the last part, the official web site of this olympic games and some reports from newspapers has been used and also personal opinions and observations has been represented. The result of the thesis is besides the economical, social or political effects of the olympics, when they?re evaluated and planned well, the role of olympics on urban transformation is the most tangible and permanent heritage for the city.Key Words: Olympic, Olympic Games, Hosting the Olympic Games, Urban Transformation, Olympic City
