Historical progress of health journalism in Turkey and the example of Hürriyet newspaper

Abstract (EN)

This study aims to define health journalism and present it's emergenge as a seperate area of expertise in press history as well as it's progress in historical context. To this end the study first handles the qualities of a health news piece, then examines the historical progress of health journalism in light of economical and social developments as well as developments in healthcare system and media. The examination of health journalism's historical progress in the example of Hürriyet newspaper constitutes the empirical aspect of this study. The data acquired from the study shows that the first examples of health journalism reaches back to 1830's but more frequent appeareance of health news in national newspapers happened in 1990's. 1990's when the first steps towards field specialization and organization of health journalists under an association were taken, was followed by 2000's when commercialization effects of health journalism was felt.
