Abstract (EN)

In order for countries to maintain unity and integrity in their internal affairs and to avoid inadequacies in external security against other countries, they need to keep up with changing and evolving technological advancements. With the pursuit of existing technological developments in the defense industry, there is a necessity to balance defense expenditures in order to enhance the defense industry. The underlying need for all of this is to ensure the country's internal and external security, independence, and the preservation of national unity at all times. Due to its geopolitical location, Turkey is a country that must always be prepared for war and internal turmoil. The country's proximity to politically, economically, and socially unstable countries exposes it to various threats such as irregular migration and terrorism. Defense expenditures and industry play a crucial role in supporting Turkey's independence and its security policies in terms of internal security and regional security. This study examines the role of the state in security and the economic impact of terrorism on defense expenditures using the example of Turkey. Accordingly, firstly, the development and institutions of the Turkish defense industry are examined. Then, the impact of terrorism on Turkish defense expenditures and defense industry, types of terrorism, and counter-terrorism issues are addressed. In addition, the aim is to explore the economic effects of terrorism on the Turkish defense industry and defense expenditures, and to reveal the depth of this relationship. The main finding of the thesis can be summarized as follows: terrorism has augmenting economic effects on Turkey's defense industry and defense expenditures and has strategic determinism on security policies.
