Investigating the setting determine approaches of the cinema professionals in Turkey

This research, focuses on the process of determining the setting in the filmmaking work. Between 2000 and 2020, the setting determination approaches of the professionals who are producing films in Turkey are examined. It aims to reveal cinema professionals' approaches to cinematic space; how preferences are made between location, studio, space created with special visual effects and fictional setting types, and to reveal the dynamics in location determination approaches. A case study was applied from qualitative research methods. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with eighteen participants, who are among the specialized sector workers, who have the titles of screenwriter, director and producer. Semi-structured interview technique was used to collect data. Similarities and differences were found in the cinematic spcace approach, the setting type decision and the location determination approaches of the three professional groups active in the setting determination process. As a result of the research, it has been determined that location are mostly preferred among setting types, other setting types are rarely used and preferred when necessary. In the process of determining location, two dimensions arise: creative decisions and material factors. Creative decisions that are unique to the movie; atmosphere, character and story structure. In addition to these elements, the budget of the film and the logistical conditions of the location constitute material dimensions. These elements have been found to be prominent dynamics in the location determination approach.
