Investigation of relationship between total electron content with winds in stratosphere over Turkey

Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, the relationship between total electron content (TEC) and wind speed in the stratosphere was investigated. It is also considered how this relationship is affected by the changes in the geomagnetic field and solar parameters. Depending on the latitude and longitude, investigation made for Ankara (39.57o N, 32.53o E), Pozantı (37.03o N, 35.21o E), Samsun (41.20o N, 36.15o E), Istanbul (40.58o N, 29.05o E) and Erzurum (40.39o N, 40.42o E) stations. The relationship between TEC and wind speed was statistically analyzed for 2015 using correlation and regression analysis. Since the TEC values vary seasonally, the wind speed and TEC data were divided into periods according to the equinox and solstice days in the analysis made by correlation analysis. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that while the correlation coefficient values were generally small, the coefficients were positive at the equinoxes and negative at the solstices. Regression analysis was analyzed separately for the Sun (IMF_Bz and F10.7) condition and the geomagnetic field (Kp and Dst) condition. In the regression models established for the geomagnetic situation, it was observed that the explainability rate was higher than the explainability rate of the models established for the Sun state at all stations except Erzurum station. It was determined that the effect of wind speed on TEC in Pozantı and Istanbul stations was smaller in geomagnetic condition than in solar condition, while it was greater in Ankara, Samsun and Erzurum stations. While the effect of wind speed on the TEC is greater than the effect of the geomagnetic Dst index, it is smaller than the Kp index at all stations except İstanbul station. It was observed that the effect of IMF_Bz index on TEC was greater than the effect of wind speed at all stations. It is known that the ionosphere is predominantly affected by the lower atmosphere and meteorological processes, especially up to the mesosphere heights. With this study, it has been seen that this effect also exists in the atmosphere of Turkey. For this reason, taking into account the stratospheric winds in the studies to be carried out on TEC will provide clearer results.
