Systematic evaluation of studies over guilt and shame in Turkey

Abstract (EN)

Objective: The objective in this study is where the criteria for guilt and shame are used in our country has been systematically analysed and evaluated. Material and Method: The national and international database concerning the purpose has been scanned without year limits, 18 studies related to the scale have been received for consideration. Results: At the end of this systematic analysis, it has been seen that women have guilt and shame feelings in a higher rate compared to men, that students receiving disciplinary punishment feel more guilt and shame, and that trauma experiences in childhood decrease guilt feelings. A positive relation between anxiety and shame has been detected. It has been seen that a group with higher psychological symptoms feel more ashamed than the one with lower symptoms, that there is a meaningful relationship in a positive way between rage and guilt, and there is a positive feeling between suicide possibility and guilt. Drug users in a family feel more guilt, and male homosexuals feel more shame than male heterosexuals. Alcohol addicts feel more guilt and shame. Mothers of children with mental diseases feel more guilt and shame than mothers of healthy ones. The relationship between guilt and shame feelings seems to be high and in the same way. Conclusion: Studies show that people often feel guilt and shame simultaneously. It is considered that this study will illuminate next studies and provide better understanding for guilt and shame experiences in Turkish paradigm.
