Comparison of human rights and democracy concepts in social studies textbooks in Turkey and Turkmenistan

Abstract (EN)

This research is an example of a comparative study of the concepts of "human rights and democracy", which are included in the field of Social Studies education, in two countries. In this respect, it is a study in Social Studies education. In the research, it is aimed to examine "Human Rights and Democracy Concepts in Turkey and Turkmenistan Social Studies Textbooks Comparatively". The case study (qualitative case) model, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. In this context, Turkey and Turkmenistan textbooks; content, text types, technique and design, effectiveness and measurement and evaluation are discussed comparatively. The study group of the research; It consists of the 7th Grade Social Studies Textbook in Turkey and the 10th Grade Learning Society Textbook in Turkmenistan. While determining the books in question, it was taken into account that they were similar to each other in terms of content. Therefore, the homogeneous sampling method was used while determining the study group. The criterion sampling method was used to determine the units in which the concepts of "human rights and democracy" were used in both textbooks. While collecting the research data, the "Living Democracy" unit in the 7th grade Social Studies Textbook for Turkey; For Turkmenistan, the "Political Life of Society" unit in the 10th Grade Learning the Society Textbook has been taken into account. Afterwards, the collected data were first classified in accordance with the sub-objectives of the research. In this context, data on human rights and democracy in the relevant units are in the first group; Techniques and designs, visuals used, data obtained from tables and graphics are in the second group; The data for measurement and evaluation with activities were examined in the third group and included in the study. In addition, before analyzing the data collected from the Turkmenistan textbook, care was taken to adapt it from Turkmen Turkish to Turkey Turkish. According to the results of the research, the 7th Grade Social Studies Textbook in Turkey and the 10th Grade Learning Society Textbook in Turkmenistan are compared in terms of content, technique and design, activities, and measurement and evaluation of the units on human rights and democracy: It has been determined that the book has a better equipped content.
