A study about determining of the status of visual arts in Turkish press and the relationship between this status and university?s arts education programs (1960-1990)

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to examine the extent of the appearance of the various art branches in media, which have an important power to affect the society, and the status of visual arts in Turkish newspapers; and to determine the relationship between this status and the university?s arts education programs in Turkey.In the study survey and descriptive research methods were used. The population of the study is national newspapers and the university?s arts education programs. The sample is drawn from December March June September issues of Cumhuriyet and Hürriyet newspapers published between 1960 and 1990, and the programs of Gazi University?s Gazi Education Faculty Fine Arts Education Department Arts Education Branch in use between 1960 and 1990. In the data collection phase of the study, a data collection form determined by the researcher was used.According to the findings, the most number of art news published on Monday in Cumhuriyet with the percentage of 45.2 and in Hürriyet with the percentage of 32.3 between 1960 and 1990. The most number of the news were printed at the top of the page in Cumhuriyet with the percentage of 67.7 and in Hürriyet with the percentage of 80.6 between 1960 and 1990. The most number of art brach published is painting in Cumhuriyet with the percentage of 93.5, and in Hürriyet with the percentage of 61.3 between 1960 and 1990.In Cumhuriyet 90.3 per cent of the art news was published without a photograph of any visual image between 1960 and 1990. In Hürriyet, 48.4 per cent of the photographs was black and white between 1960 and 1990. In Cumhuriyet, the person who prepared the news was not specified among the 61.3 per cent of the visual arts news between 1960 and 1990. In Hürriyet, the person who prepared the news was not specified among the 93.5 per cent of the visual arts news between 1960 and 1990. In Cumhuriyet, 64.5 per cent of the visual arts news was in the form of notification between 1960 and 1990. In Hürriyet, 58.1 per cent of the visual arts news was in the for of short presentation between 1960 and 1990.In a result of this study, a relationship between the university?s arts education programs and news published in Turkish press was observed. According to the results of the study, the most number of visual arts news published in Cumhuriyet and Hürriyet between 1960 and 1990 was in the area of painting.Key Words: Mass Media, Newspaper, Art Education, Art Education Programs, Visual Arts.
