The reflection of Turkey-Greece population exchange on Turkish cinema after 2000: My Grandfather's People, Waiting for the Clouds

Migration occurred caused by some movements due to the tendency of individuals and communities from one place to another. The concept of migration has been focused with more than one definitions as it in the field of interest of different branches of science and the reason of migration has varied in political, economical and socio-cultural perspectives throughout the history. Migration movements have had positive/negative effects and changes onn individuals and societies in terms of reasons, developments and results. Population Exchange, which is expressed as forced migration, refers to the displacement of communities by the state as a result of agreements between the two countries. The 1923 Turkey-Greece Exchange Migration was carried out with additional protocols to the Lausanne Negotiations after the First World War. Before 1923, the concept of "exchange" was first heard as an idea after the 1912-1913 Balkan Wars. In this period, Turkish-Bulgarian and Turkish-Greek exchange attempts were made. Migrations affect works of art. It becomes the subject of the art branches. Migration movements experienced become a story in movies and are reflected on the big screen. The Turkish Cinema has also been affected by both internal and external migration. Since the 1950s, the theme of immigration and the changes brought about by immigration have been included as subjects in many Turkish films. The population exchange between Turkey and Greece in 1923 deeply affected the societies of the two countries. Films about the social events that developed with the exchange were shot. In Turkish Cinema the 1991 production "The Other Side of Water" by Tomris Giritlioğlu, 2004 production "Waiting For Clouds" by yeşim ustaoğlu, 2011 production "My Grandfather's People" by Çağan Irmak, 2012 production "The Strangers At Home" by Dilek Keser and Ulaş Güneş foxus on the theme of population exchange. In this study, the films "Waiting for the Clouds" and "People of My Grandfather" were examined through the effects of migration and exchange on individuals/communities.
