Geographical discoveries in secondary education history textbooks in turkey and new comments

In this study it is aimed to examine which periods ?Geographical Discoveries? include in secondary education history textbooks in Turkey, whether the mentioned discoveries and discoverers were enough or not, how much place these discovery maps and the pictures of discoverers take, whether scientific mistakes were made or not about this subject in the present textbooks and also to form an opinion about including the discoveries which lasting from Before Christ (B.C) to now and which are not mentioned in textbooks to the secondary education history programme.It is determined which facts about ?Geographical Discoveries? are mentioned in secondary education history textbooks. For this purpose, in this study 39 of the secondary education history textbooks studied between 1929 and 2007 in Turkey were examined. Since ?Geographical Discoveries? subject was not included in Public History textbooks published in 1929 this study was carried out on 36 textbooks. While doing the study it was also applied to the contemporary scientific sources related with the subject.The study consists of four chapters. In the first chapter the fact of problem, the problem sentence, sub-problems, the aim, importance, hypotheses and limitations of the study and other studies related with the subject were discussed; in the second chapter it was explained by which method the study carried out; in the third chapter findings and discussions about the study were stated. In final chapter the result and suggestions were explained.
