Vermicomposting of tobacco waste and horse manure

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of the agricultural production is to obtain the basic food and raw-material needs of the humanity. Thus, unlike the ordinary course of the nature, the obtained products do not return in to the soil, but used off-system and transferred to the consumers in order the system to balance itself. The wastes remained from the harvest and consumption are used as fodder or collected at city-dumps. The lack of nutrients at the soil, caused as a result of harvesting the products, is generally tried to be overcame by the use of chemical fertilizers or by farm manure obtained from the cattle, sheep, poultry and horse manure or by sowing pulse or graminae for one year and mixing them as a green manure. Use of compost in agriculture is possible by applying the products, which are obtained from any and all types of vegetal and animal organic materials those we take out of the system in various senses, by using many different methods and techniques in compliance with the growing techniques and the purpose. Composting is one of the most efficient methods for including the organic wastes to the natural cycle with a sustainable manner. Compared with the aerobic composting, vermicomposting method is very commonly used in the recent times. At this research we examined the possibilities to obtain vermicompost from horse manure and tobacco waste by using Eisenia fetida worm and we examined the biochemical changes during the vermicomposting process. The vermicomposting process lasted for 90 days during which three laboratory analyses were carried out on day 30, 60 and 90 for chemical, microbial and biochemical analysis of the vermicompost. It had been observed that there took place a decrease in the sense of biochemical parameters at the composting made via worms. The highest enzyme activities had been measured at the samples taken on the 60th day, and the lowest enzyme activities had been measured at the samples taken on the 30th day. According to research results, ıt can be stated that, both organic material are not suitable for vermicompost, instead thermophilic composting is fit to convert these organic wastes into stable compost.
