Abstract (EN)
Hemoglobinopathies are the most common single-gene disorders worldwide, and their prevalence is expected to increase in the future. This study aims to identify abnormal hemoglobin variants in the Çukurova region. Blood samples collected at the Central Laboratory of Çukurova University Balcalı Hospital were analyzed using hemoglobin electrophoresis, sickling test, and ARMS-PCR methods to determine the types of abnormal hemoglobin present. The results showed that 63.53% of the samples had HbAS, 33.15% had HbSS, 1.65% had HbSC, 1.12% had HbAC, and 0.55% had HbAE, indicating a high rate of sickle cell carriage in the region. We recommend implementing screening programs in areas where hemoglobinopathy is endemic to reduce the number of affected births and thereby lower the economic costs to the country.
