User-space interaction and interior design in waiting areas of international airports: The case of Istanbul International Airport

International airports with public use areas are interior spaces with a high number of users where is one of the most important structures of countries. International airports are one of the stops where people from different countries come together depending on the human mobility in the global world. Since these buildings are large scale, complex planning and interior spaces with a high number of users, hey appear as spaces which are constantly developed and changed in user interaction in today's world. In parallel with the fact that air transportation is the fastest way of the trasportation and has heavy human traffic today, the waiting areas in the interiors of the airports have gained their importance for the user and have caused the expectation of different needs. In this study, the decisive dynamics of the interaction between the interior and the user are defined by considering the perception and experience created by the user existing between space and time. In the context of placelessness and timelessness, the concept of non-existent space is discussed through spatial experience and user belonging. User and spatial interaction are searched with their formal counterparts through sample airports; It has been researched under titles of "spatial organization and form relationship", "functional spatial use" and "space belonging and meaning relationship". Within the scope of this study, international Istanbul airport passenger waiting areas were examined and evaluated by considering the factors affecting user satisfaction.
