This thesis explores the impact of international graduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields in the United States on the innovative outputs of U.S. universities. The analysis focuses on both innovation production of universities, measured by the patent grants, and the quality of these innovations, measured by the citations received by these patents. The study examines biennial periods from 1994 to 2016. To capture the causality, I employ the instrumental variables (IV) approach. The instrument exploits the historical distribution of international graduate students as a predictor of future migration flows. The findings indicate a positive and significant impact of international graduate students on patent counts, but no significant effect on patent citations.
