Impacts of international sports organizations on the host city (2023 UEFA Champions league final istanbul example)

The aim of this research is to reveal the effects of the 2023 UEFA Champions League Final, which will be held in Istanbul, on the city and what the legacy will be. In order to examine these multifaceted effects in depth, qualitative research method was chosen as the method and case study was chosen as the approach. In this study, an interview form consisting of semi-structured questions was used as a data collection tool. The research group was selected using purposive sampling. This group consists of 16 people who are interested in sports and football and who have a certain knowledge in the subject, including fans, sports writers, trainers, physical education and sports teachers, academics, sports managers and sportsmen who are thought to contribute to the study. As a result of the interviews with these 16 people, research data emerged. These data were first coded by following an inductive way, and categories were reached from the codes, and themes were reached from the categories. As a result of these analyzes, the effects of the champions league final on the host city Istanbul, five main themes and fifteen sub-themes related to these themes emerged. These main themes are; effects in terms of recognition and prestige, effects in terms of politics and lobbying, effects in terms of economic and tourism, effects in terms of socio-cultural and sports heritage, and possible risks and unexpected situations that come with hosting.
