Climate migration and digital technologies in UNHCR documents

Focusing on the operational activities of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), this study assesses how the application of digital technology has been utilized in climate change-induced human mobility. The crisis caused by climate change brings with it an urgent need for the implementation of effective digital solutions to manage the process. Within the scope of this study, digital technology applications realized by UNHCR in managing humanitarian needs and human mobility arising from climate change are analyzed. In the study, document analysis was used as a method with a qualitative research design in analyzing UNHCR's global reports published in 2015-2024. The thematic analysis technique was used to identify the application areas of digital technologies and to evaluate how they are used. In the findings of the research, thematic areas such as registration and documentation; communication, information and access to basic services; data collection and analysis were identified as areas of application of digital technologies and how these technologies were applied were evaluated. Overall, this research aims to assess the current situation on how organizations such as UNHCR can make use of digital technologies for more effective humanitarian management in the face of climate-related challenges for migrants and to discuss the problems and opportunities of digital technologies.
