A study on the relationship between imaginations of God and personality traits in university youth

Abstract (EN)
The aim of this research is to examine there relationship between personality traits and perception of God and religious attitude. Relational scanning model from quantitative research methods was used in the study. A total of 400 students, including 204 women and 196 men, who studied for a bachelor's degree at Sakarya University and Uludag University, sampled there search. In the fall semester of the 2019-2020 academic year, a survey was conducted in the classroom environment to obtain data from students. The questionnaire, consisting of a Personal Information Form, a short version of the Five Factor Personality Inventory, the God Perception Scale and the Arrow-Religious Attitude Scale, also included questions of parental attitude, parental religious belief and attitude perceived in childhood. Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis Test in cross-group comparisons for analysis of the findings and, Spearman for correlation analysis were applied. In general, it has been determined that students' perceptions of God and religious attitudes are positive, neuroticism personality property is low and responsibility personality property is high. Personality traits, perception of God and religious attitude and demographic variables were found to be significant differences. It was determined that female students perceive God more positively than male students and their neuroticism, extrovertism, compatibility and responsibility traits were higher than men. It has been revealed that students of the Faculty of Theology have a more positive religious attitude and a more positive perception of God compared to other faculties. When we look at the personality traits, openness personality trait is higher among the students of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences than the students of the Faculty of Business Administration. The compatibility personality trait was found to be higher among the students of the Faculty of Theology compared to the students at the Faculty of Engineering. It has been found that there are positively significant relationships between neuroticism from personality traits and negative perception of God, between extrovertism responsibility, compatibility and positive perception of God. It has been found that there are significant positive, and in a negative way between openness and religious attitude. There is a positive relationship between positive God perception and positive religious attitude. The general conclusion we have obtained from our research is that there are meaningful relationships between personality traits, perception of God and religious attitude. Demographic variables have a determining effect on perception of God, personality traits and religious attitude.
