An investigation of preparatory students' attainment levels to cefr's B1 standards at universities

This study was conducted to investigate a public university's and a foundation university's English preparatory students' attainment levels to the Common European Language Reference Framework's B1 standards and to determine their self-efficacy perceptions in the four language skills. An international test was used to identify students' levels in the four language skills. "Self-Efficacy Scale" developed by the researcher was applied to evaluate students' self-efficacy in the four language skills. "Instructor Program Evaluation Questionnaire" was used to take the views of the instructors. When the universities were evaluated in terms of reaching the goals in four skills at the end of the instructional program, it was found that both universities did not achieve very high scores in all four language skills, particularly in speaking and writing skills. The analysis conducted regarding the self-efficacy perceptions of students in reading skills, the majority of the students in both universities expressed themselves as being able to perform B1 level reading skills moderately. Most students could perform listening skills moderately and above. The majority of students were found to believe that their ability to communicate was at moderate levels and above, according to the average of self-efficacy perceptions in reaching B1 level speaking skills. In both universities, the skills of students with the highest self-efficacy skills were speaking skills. According to the results of the research, students at both universities considered themselves successful at moderate and above levels in writing skills.
