Determination of trauma level in university students after the 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş centered earthquake

On February 6, 2023, two earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6 occurred approximately 9 hours apart, affecting 11 provinces in Turkey, centered in Kahramanmaraş. In addition to the destructive and physical effects of this earthquake, it also brought trauma. The aim of this research is to determine the trauma levels of university students who experienced the earthquake in the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquake that took place on February 6, 2023; To examine the differentiation according to their gender, the grade they continue their education in, the department they study in and the earthquake they experienced. The sample of the research consists of 100 students studying at Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University. Students were selected randomly and the data of the research was collected through a survey. Data were collected with two different data collection tools: "Attitude Scale for Determining the Psychological Effects of Individuals Exposed to Earthquakes" and "Post-Earthquake Trauma Level Determination Scale". The data were analyzed with a statistical package program. First, the distribution of the data was investigated and it was found that it did not show a normal distribution. Since it did not show a normal distribution, the analyzes were continued with non-parametric Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis-H tests. According to the results of the analysis, it was observed that the trauma levels of university students differed according to gender and grade of education, but did not differ according to the province at the time of the earthquake and the department of education.
