The examination of mindfulness and mental well-being on university students

This study is a descriptive study conducted to determine the mindfulness levels and mental well-being of university students and their socio-demographic and school-related characteristics that affect them. The universe of the study consists of 13,144 students studying at Başkent University Bağlıca Campus in the fall semester of 2019-2020 academic year. The sample of the research was calculated according to the sample calculation formula when the universe is known and the number of samples was determined as 378. The selection of individuals to be sampled was determined by making proportional selection by stratified random sampling method according to the number of students of the faculties. Taking into account the risk of missing questions in the questionnaire, the study was completed with 400 students in order to prevent sample loss. Data collection was carried out with the "Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale", Personal Information Form. The data obtained from the research were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 program. Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H test and Bonferroni test were used to determine whether there was a difference between groups according to gender, age, faculty, class, perceived socio-economic level and perceived academic achievement level. In the correlation analysis, Spearman was benefited from the correlation analysis. The mean mental well-being score of the students was 51.55±6,35. The median was 52. No statistically significant difference was found between students' mental well-being according to gender, age, faculty and class variables. According to the variables of socio-economic level and academic achievement level, mental well-being was found to be statistically significant. According to the results of the study, the median mindfulness point was 57 and the average mindfulness points of the students were 57.22±7,72. There is no statistically significant difference between students' mindfulness levels according to gender, age, faculty and class variables. According to the variables of socio-economic level and academic achievement level, mindfulness levels were found to be statistically significant. A positive, strong and significant relationship was found between the students' mindfulness levels and their mental well-being (r= 0,757, p= 0,001). It may be beneficial for students to organize activities aimed at developing conscious awareness in cooperation with universities due to the increase of conscious awareness and mental well-being.
