Terminal and instrumental value hierarchies of the university students

ABSTRACT In this study, value hierarchies of the university students were studied. Whether value priorities of the university students differ according to their sex, studydig branch, their residential area and political view point were studied. For the determine of rating value hierarchies of the students, Rokeach Value Survey, Form D developed by Milton Rokeach was used in this study. The study was run on Dokuz Eylül and Ege University students for the 1996-1997 academic year. Sampling group, 264 students -141 famale and 121 male- was randomly determined. Variance analysis, F test, correlation analysis were used for statistical evaluation of the data. Based on the results of this study, freedom, self respect, a world at peace, true friendship, inner harmony were rated the most important terminal value priorities of the university students. An exciting life, national security, social recognation, pleasure and salvation were evaluated the least important As for the Instrumental value, honest, independent, courageous, broadminded and logical were rated the top while cheeful, capable, clean, polite and obedient were ordered the lowest priorities. Acording to sex and residential area in which they lived the longest of subjects the similarities were more than the differences. As for the studying branch and political point of view the differences were more striking than the similarities. VI
