Investigation of the relationship between internet addiction and emotional intelligence in university students

Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted to investigate whether there was a meaningful relationship between internet addiction and emotional intelligence levels among university students. The sample group of the study consists 200 university students who determined on the basis of volunteerism. Students' internet addiction status was examined both in terms of sociodemographic factors and in terms of emotional intelligence and sub-dimensions of emotional intelligence. Besides, the relationship between emotional intelligence and sociodemographic characteristics has also been examined. Personal Information Form, Young Internet Addiction Scale and Bar-On Emotional Intelligence Scale were used as data collection tools in the study. The results of the study showed that levels of emotional intelligence and emotional intelligence sub-dimensions decreased as the level of internet addiction increased in university students. According to sex, internet addiction rates were found different and internet addiction rate in men were significantly higher than women. The results of the study discussed in the light of the related literature.
