In university students relationship between social phobia and self-esteem and the factors affecting it

Prof. Dr. Gülümser SERTBAŞ August 2004, 1 14 pages This study was carried out descriptively in order to determine the relationship between Social Phobia and Self-Esteem and the factors affecting it. In the education year of 2000-2004, between December 2003 and April 2004, totally 1010 freshmen (375 females 635males) of 37 section involving in 5 faculties, 2 higher schools, 2 higher trade schools and Turkish Classical Music State Conservatory, enrolled in the sampling. As a data collection tool, a developed by the researcher a Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) and a Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSEI) was used. In the evaluation of data obtained, chi-Square test, student's t test, variance analysis (one-way ANOVA) and in post_hoc assessment Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference test was used. According to the results obtained from research, 36,1 % students diagnosed with social phobia., 27 % with fear of social phobia and 48,5 % with avoidance from social phobia. Self-esteem scores of students diagnosed with social phobia were found low (p<0,5), it was determined that diagnose of social phobia was affected by the factors such as age, gender, behaviors and education of parents income level, and students previous places of residence (p <0,05). In line with the results obtained from research suggestions in regards to reducing the social phobia in our community were made by the researcher.
